Kgothatso Montjane, South Africa's tennis star, is filled with pride after her remarkable achievement of winning the Wimbledon women’s doubles alongside Japan's Yui Kamiji. The duo triumphed over the Dutch team of Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen in the final, securing victory in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This win marks Montjane’s third Grand Slam title, adding to her previous victories at the Roland Garros and US Open, although she is still in pursuit of her first singles title.
This significant victory is set to boost Montjane's confidence as she gears up for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris, scheduled from August 28 to September 8, 2024. "Going to the Paralympics with this win is such a great motivation. It is exactly what I needed before the Games," Montjane shared, highlighting the morale boost the win provides. She feels this achievement will help her carry positive energy into the Paralympics and contribute to the ongoing legacy of wheelchair tennis.
Montjane and Kamiji's victory is particularly sweet, as they faced the same Dutch duo that defeated them in last year’s Wimbledon finals. De Groot has been a formidable presence in women's wheelchair tennis, holding an impressive streak of 15 consecutive Grand Slam titles. At 38, Montjane expressed her satisfaction in finally halting De Groot's dominance, stating, "It is satisfying to beat De Groot and her partner in the finals because they have dominated quite a lot."
Upon her return home, Montjane was greeted with a hero's welcome. She was met by Limpopo's MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr. Jerry Maseko, along with family, friends, media representatives, and officials from Tennis South Africa and various government departments. This warm reception reflects the pride and admiration her achievement has inspired across her home country.
