Kei Nishikori made a triumphant return to tennis by winning the Caribbean Open event after being sidelined for 20 months due to injury. The Japanese player has faced multiple fitness issues in recent years, including ankle and hip problems that hindered his career, despite reaching the 2014 US Open final and reaching a career-high ranking of No. 4 in 2015.
Nishikori expressed surprise at his own level of play during the Palmas del Mar Challenger event in Puerto Rico, where he defeated Michael Zheng in the final after progressing through four previous rounds.
Nishikori's unexpected victory exceeded his own expectations, and he couldn't believe the level at which he performed. It has given him confidence and made him contemplate a return to the ATP Tour.
Fellow player Andy Murray, who has also faced significant injuries, congratulated Nishikori on his comeback success, highlighting the mutual respect between the two. They have had several memorable encounters in their careers, having met 11 times in the past.
Nishikori's comeback win marks a significant milestone for him as he aims to extend his stay in professional tennis.
Despite acknowledging the challenges of his body holding up, he expressed a motivation for rehabilitation and is determined to make the most of his remaining years on the tour.
