Karolina Muchova withdraws from debut WTA finals due to injury; Maria Sakkari steps in
Posted : 24 October 2023
Karolina Muchova, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, has regrettably withdrawn from the WTA Finals, which would have marked her debut in the prestigious event. The Czech star, who made an impressive run to the French Open final earlier this year, received acclaim for her performance but has grappled with a wrist injury during the latter part of the season.
Muchova hasn't participated in a competitive match since her loss to Coco Gauff, who also defeated her in the Cincinnati Open, in the US Open semi-finals back in September. Despite exhaustive efforts and treatment, she has been unable to recover in time for the season-ending tournament in Cancun. Expressing her disappointment on Instagram, Muchova thanked her fans and expressed her determination to return in 2024 for another chance at the WTA Finals.
Maria Sakkari, who secured the ninth place in the WTA Race to Cancun, will step in to participate in the tournament for the third consecutive year. Sakkari, who finished as a runner-up in the 2021 and 2022 editions, is prepared to make another bid for the title.
The WTA Finals in Cancun is set to feature an impressive lineup, including World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, four-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek, and US Open champion Coco Gauff. Furthermore, 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula are also set to grace the tournament.
Nevertheless, uncertainties loom over World No. 7 Ons Jabeur and World No. 6 Marketa Vondrousova, both facing injury concerns. Jabeur, who recently withdrew from the Zhengzhou Open with a knee injury, and Vondrousova, who has played sparingly since her quarter-final exit at the US Open, remain questionable for their participation. Notably, the battle for the World No. 1 ranking between Sabalenka and Swiatek promises an added layer of excitement in Cancun.
