Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic advanced to the US Open semifinals for the second consecutive year with a straight-sets victory over Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia. Muchova, ranked 52nd in the world, won 6-1, 6-4 and will next face either world No. 1 Iga Swiatek or Jessica Pegula for a spot in the final.
Despite a brief interruption to dash to the bathroom after taking a 2-1 lead in the second set, Muchova maintained her composure and performance. She explained the situation as a personal issue that she preferred not to elaborate on, apologizing for any disruption it may have caused.
Muchova, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, previously defeated two-time champion Naomi Osaka and French Open and Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini to reach her fourth Grand Slam semifinal. Last year, she missed several months due to a serious wrist injury, but she has shown strong form since her return to the tour. She now looks forward to a challenging semifinal against either Swiatek or Pegula.
