The opening session of Day 4 at the WTT Champions Macao 2024, presented by Galaxy Entertainment Group, saw a significant shake-up in the Men’s Singles draw as Kao Cheng-Jui delivered a standout performance to oust Lin Gaoyuan with scores of 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9. Despite a previous defeat to Lin in Chongqing earlier this season, Kao came into the match with determination, quickly asserting himself with aggressive topspin play.
The match saw Kao, currently ranked World No. 31, take an early lead and showcase his fearless approach against Lin. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as Kao seemed poised to secure an upset. Although Lin managed to claw back in game three and held a 6-9 lead in the fourth, Kao responded with a strong comeback, winning the final five points consecutively to clinch the victory without needing a fifth game.
In another notable result, the event’s No. 4 seed, Tomokazu Harimoto, was also eliminated in the round of 16 by Lin Shidong. Their third encounter proved to be as competitive as their previous matches. Harimoto appeared to be on course for victory with a 2-5 lead in the decider, but Lin Shidong reversed the situation, ultimately securing the win with a score of 11-8 in the fifth game.
Chen Xingtong, the Women’s Singles runner-up from the 2022 Macao event, faced an early challenge from Linda Bergstrom but eventually overcame her opponent in four games, finishing with a more decisive score of 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4. Meanwhile, Miyuu Kihara continued her strong performance by defeating Adriana Diaz in straight games (11-7, 12-10, 12-10), and Cheng I-Ching advanced to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year in Macao, overcoming Orawan Paranang 3-1 (11-7, 12-10, 10-12, 11-6).
