Joao Fonseca Battles Past Jacob Fearnley in Indian Wells Debut

Posted : 07 March 2025

Joao Fonseca marked his Indian Wells debut with a hard-fought victory over Britain's Jacob Fearnley, overcoming a third-set deficit to win 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The Brazilian teenager dominated the opening set, but Fearnley responded strongly in the second, taking advantage of the windy conditions to level the match.

In the deciding set, Fearnley surged ahead 3-1, but Fonseca displayed his resilience, winning five consecutive games and sealing the match with a spectacular lunge volley at the net.

The 18-year-old, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, expressed his excitement about playing on center court at Indian Wells, calling it a dream come true. "People call it the fifth Grand Slam, and I can understand why. It’s literally a paradise," he said.

Fonseca has been in the spotlight recently after defeating Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open for his first top-10 victory and claiming his maiden ATP title in Buenos Aires last month. The young Brazilian also drew energy from the vocal support of his compatriots in the stands.

Fonseca acknowledged the passionate backing he has received at tournaments, noting that Brazilian fans have been present wherever he competes. Their encouragement will be crucial as he prepares for his next challenge against 13th seed Jack Draper.

The win in Indian Wells further cements Fonseca's rising status in the tennis world, with his aggressive shot-making and composure under pressure setting the stage for an exciting future.
