Jiri Lehecka ends Rafael Nadal's Madrid Open run in emotional farewell

Posted : 01 May 2024

Jiri Lehecka delivered a stunning upset on Tuesday by ending Rafael Nadal's remarkable journey at the Madrid Open, marking the Spaniard's final appearance at the Masters 1000 tournament. Nadal's bid for a record-breaking 100th Masters 1000 quarterfinal was halted by the 30th-seeded Lehecka, who secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory and progressed to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals, denying Nadal the opportunity to extend his unparalleled legacy in Madrid, where he holds the record for most wins (59) and titles (five).

Reflecting on his final match at the Madrid Open, Nadal expressed gratitude for the special week and emotional moments, acknowledging the opportunity to play once more on the iconic court. Amid speculation about his future retirement, the 22-time Grand Slam champion hinted at the nearing end of his illustrious career, with physical issues influencing his decision regarding upcoming tournaments, including Roland Garros later this month.

In a closely contested match, Lehecka broke Nadal's serve early in the second set, maintaining his advantage to secure victory. Following the match, a heartfelt ceremony honored Nadal's extraordinary contributions to the tournament, with banners displaying "Gracias Rafa" suspended above the stands.

Despite the loss, Nadal expressed gratitude for the support and love he received from fans, asserting his intention to return in the future. Meanwhile, Lehecka, elated by his achievement, described the win as bittersweet, acknowledging Nadal's legendary status and the incredible energy of the crowd, while wishing the best for the departing champion.
