Jessica Pegula Withdraws from WTA Finals Due to Knee Injury, Kasatkina Steps In

Posted : 07 November 2024

Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the WTA Finals in Riyadh due to a left knee injury, the tournament confirmed on Wednesday. Pegula, who was the runner-up at last year’s event, struggled in her opening two matches in Saudi Arabia, losing both in straight sets and failing to qualify for the semifinals. Her scheduled match against defending champion Iga Swiatek on Thursday will now be replaced by Daria Kasatkina.

Pegula, 30, explained that she had been dealing with a recurring injury that unexpectedly flared up during the tournament. Despite feeling fine before practice sessions, the knee discomfort became more noticeable before her first match, making it difficult for her to move comfortably on the court. She decided to pull out of the competition to avoid further complications.

Kasatkina, who recently claimed the WTA 500 title in Ningbo, will take Pegula’s place in the round-robin schedule. Ranked No. 9 in the world, the Russian has faced Swiatek six times, winning just once, with the Polish player having won their last five encounters. As of now, Coco Gauff is the only player in the Orange Group in Riyadh who has secured a spot in the semifinals.
