Jessica Pegula staged a remarkable comeback at the Berlin Open, overcoming five championship points to defeat Anna Kalinskaya and clinch her fifth WTA Tour title, marking her debut victory on grass and solidifying her status as a contender for the upcoming Wimbledon.
The American, who recently returned from injury and missed the European clay-court season, showed resilience throughout the tournament. After completing a rain-delayed semi-final victory over Coco Gauff, Pegula faced a tough challenge against Kalinskaya in the final. Despite trailing 4-1 in the third set, she fought back to win 6-7 (0-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Pegula's victory underscores her growing prowess on grass courts ahead of Wimbledon, where she reached the quarter-finals last year, narrowly losing to eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova in a competitive match.
Before Wimbledon commences on July 1, Pegula is scheduled to compete at the Eastbourne International, aiming to further hone her game on grass and build momentum heading into the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
