Jessica Pegula dominates Toray Pan Pacific Open, reaches seventh 2023 semifinal

Jessica Pegula showcased her dominance on the court at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, breezing into her seventh semifinal of 2023 with remarkable efficiency. Facing off against the sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina, Pegula needed a mere 59 minutes to secure her victory, with a final score of 6-1, 6-0.

This triumph marked Pegula's second consecutive win against Kasatkina, her previous victory dating back to the first round of Rome 2021, where she triumphed 7-5, 6-3. In 2023, the American athlete has demonstrated her prowess against top-tier opponents, boasting a record of 10 wins and 9 losses against the Top 20 players.

Although Pegula faced an initial setback, dropping her serve in the opening game, she swiftly rebounded with a display of aggressive and precise tennis. She impressively rattled off 12 consecutive games, leaving Kasatkina with minimal opportunities to gain a foothold in the match.

Pegula's offensive prowess was evident in her 25 winners, dwarfing Kasatkina's lone winner, and she capitalized on this dominance by breaking her opponent's serve six times, often sealing the game with a clean return winner.

Kasatkina struggled to find openings in the match, and whenever she attempted to mount a comeback, Pegula ruthlessly denied her. Pegula's efficient drive volleys thwarted three break points as she served out the first set. Even in the second set, Kasatkina found herself unable to convert eight game points across her initial two service games.

In the semifinals, Jessica Pegula is set to face either the fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari or the fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia, promising an exciting showdown as she continues her impressive 2023 campaign at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
