World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Masters, citing an "intestinal virus," according to tournament organizers on Tuesday. The Italian star, who secured the year-end top ranking for the first time in his career at 23, will be replaced in the tournament draw by French qualifier Arthur Cazaux. Cazaux is set to compete in the second round against either fellow Frenchman Corentin Moutet or American Ben Shelton.
Organizers noted that Sinner contracted the virus before arriving in Paris, with the timing of his illness raising concerns as he approaches the ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled for November 10-17. This prestigious event will feature the top eight players of the season, and Sinner is aiming to compete at full strength. Following the ATP Finals, he is also expected to join Italy’s defense of their Davis Cup title in Malaga, Spain, later in November.
Sinner’s impressive 2024 season includes his first two Grand Slam titles, clinched at the Australian Open and the US Open, along with seven tournament victories, including Masters 1000 wins in Miami, Cincinnati, and Shanghai. However, his achievements come amid a potential suspension threat in a doping case recently escalated by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Sinner has also had mixed luck in Paris, as he was forced to withdraw from this tournament last year before his second match.
