Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner expressed on Sunday that he would only participate in the French Open if he achieves full fitness after being compelled to withdraw from the ongoing Italian Open due to injury. Sinner, ranked second in the world, announced his withdrawal from the Rome tournament on Saturday, unable to recuperate from a right hip injury that also led to his retirement from the Madrid Open the previous week.
Addressing the press in Rome, Sinner emphasized his priority of returning to optimal health before considering competitive play. He remained cautious about his recovery timeline, stating, "I will only take part in Roland Garros if I am 100 per cent fit." Sinner underscored the significance of ensuring his body's complete healing to prevent any prolonged setbacks in his career.
While acknowledging the challenge of an imperfect preparation for Paris due to limited recovery time, Sinner affirmed his commitment to maximizing his efforts to regain fitness. Despite his withdrawal from the Italian Open, he aimed to dedicate himself fully to his recovery process in anticipation of future competitions, including the French Open, scheduled to commence on May 26.
