Jannik Sinner will debut his new world No. 1 ranking at the Halle Open next week, stating on Saturday that he is prepared for a brief grass-court season. The 22-year-old Italian, who ascended to the ATP top ranking spot after the French Open, will use the German tournament, starting Monday, as his sole competitive preparation for Wimbledon, which begins on July 1.
Sinner, acknowledging the limited number of grass tournaments he participates in, expressed his excitement about transitioning to the surface. "This is special for me," he said. "There are not so many grass events for me – just here and Wimbledon. But it's nice to get back onto grass, it's very different. In the first days you have to get used to the movement, which is difficult. Then you could face a player in the early rounds who has played already and has feeling for the grass."
The top seed will start his grass-court season at a stadium designed as a smaller replica of Wimbledon's Centre Court, complete with a retractable roof. Sinner has a fondness for the event, having received a wild card into qualifying in 2019 and making it to the quarterfinals last year before retiring against Alexander Bublik. "It can only help but build confidence for Wimbledon," Sinner remarked.
After a delayed reception in his hometown of San Candido, where he celebrated his achievements with family and friends, Sinner arrived in Halle. Reflecting on his homecoming, he said, "It was nice to share this moment with my little hometown. We all celebrated together and I was able to spend time with the younger kids." As he prepares for Wimbledon, Sinner also has the Paris Olympic Games in mind, looking forward to his first Olympics and the opportunity to meet other athletes. Sinner will face Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the first round in Halle.
