Jannik Sinner's former physical trainer, Umberto Ferrara, has spoken out regarding the scandal surrounding the three-time Grand Slam champion's positive tests for a banned substance. Ferrara, in his first public comments since the incident, denied any responsibility and laid the blame on Sinner's former physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.
Sinner was handed a three-month suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) in February, after admitting partial responsibility for mistakes made by his team, following a contamination incident involving the substance clostebol.
Ferrara explained that he had used the banned substance for years, under a doctor's prescription for an illness, and had taken measures to ensure it was safely stored. He had recommended Naldi use it for a cut that had not healed, while making it clear that the product should never come into contact with Sinner.
However, Ferrara claims that Naldi ignored his instructions and failed to take the necessary precautions when treating Sinner, including using the spray without gloves or washing his hands afterward. Ferrara expressed regret over the situation but stood by his own actions, insisting he had followed the proper protocol.
In the aftermath of the scandal, both Ferrara and Naldi were dismissed from Sinner's team. Despite the challenges, Ferrara emphasized that he did not feel responsible for the incident, though he acknowledged the personal toll it had taken.
The suspension will end on May 4, allowing Sinner to return in time for the French Open, where he reached the semifinals last year. His comeback will include the Italian Open in Rome, followed by the French Open from May 25 to June 8.
