Jannik Sinner Overcomes Early Setback to Begin China Open Title Defense with Victory

Posted : 27 September 2024

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner kicked off his title defense at the China Open with a hard-fought victory over Chile's Nicolas Jarry, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday. The match marked Sinner's return to competitive action after his recent triumph at the US Open, where he claimed his second major title. Following this win, he is set to face either veteran Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion and wildcard entry, or Russia's Roman Safiullin in the next round.

Sinner arrived in Beijing riding high on momentum, having also secured the Cincinnati Masters title just before the US Open, extending his winning streak to 11 matches. Despite entering the match in excellent form, he faced challenges against Jarry, who managed to take the first set, breaking Sinner's serve to gain a 4-3 lead and eventually securing the set after a strong display, including multiple aces.

After dropping the first set, Sinner quickly regrouped, racing to a 3-0 lead in the second. He showed resilience and determination, bouncing back from the early setback to control the pace of the match. Sinner's tactical adjustments helped him nullify Jarry's powerful serve, allowing him to claim the second set and then dominate in the final set, where he broke Jarry's serve twice to secure a comfortable victory.

With this win, Sinner not only advanced in the tournament but also continued to demonstrate his status as a top contender. His primary challengers in the Beijing tournament include four-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz, along with Russian players Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, who are seeded third and fourth respectively. Notably, Novak Djokovic will not be competing in this year's event, which coincides with a WTA 1000 tournament happening simultaneously in the Chinese capital.
