The eighth round of the 80th Internazionali BNL d'Italia brings an end to Jannik Sinner's race.
The Francisco Cerundolo defeated the Italian number 1, who had been the sixth favourite of the Roman Masters 1000.
The number 24 seed defeated top-10 players for the third time this season, winning 67(3) 62 62, and will face Norwegian Casper Ruud, the fourth seeding force, in the next round for a spot in the semifinals. Casper Ruud defeated Laslo Djere 61 63 in his match.
The 24-year-old Argentine knew he had a chance to defeat Italy's top player on Centre Court and one of the primary favourites for the match's outcome.
Since Federico Delbonis in 2021, Cerundolo is also the only Argentine to have advanced this far in the Roman tournament.
