Jannik Sinner Keeps Italy's Davis Cup Defense Alive in Quarterfinal Clash

Posted : 21 November 2024

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner kept Italy's Davis Cup title defense alive with a commanding victory over Sebastian Baez, leveling their quarterfinal tie with Argentina at 1-1 and forcing a decisive doubles match. Sinner, who has won two Grand Slams this season and triumphed at the ATP Finals without dropping a set, overwhelmed Baez 6-2, 6-1 in just 72 minutes. Despite challenging court conditions, Sinner delivered a dominant performance, breaking Baez’s serve multiple times and firing 10 winners to close the match. Reflecting on the win, Sinner expressed his determination to push Italy toward another successful campaign.

In the opening singles rubber, Francisco Cerundolo gave Argentina an early lead with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lorenzo Musetti. The world No. 30 was in excellent form, using his powerful forehand to unsettle Musetti, who struggled to find rhythm against the relentless Argentine. Although Cerundolo handed Italy an early break with a double fault, he quickly recovered and broke Musetti three times in the first set. His confidence soared in the second set, where he dominated play and sealed the match as Musetti faltered under pressure.

Sinner's victory against Baez highlighted his crucial role in Italy's Davis Cup aspirations. The 23-year-old has been instrumental in Italy's recent success, including their title win last year after a 47-year drought. Despite the shadow of a pending appeal over a doping case involving clostebol, Sinner’s focus on the court remains unshaken. Against Baez, Sinner broke serve repeatedly and weathered a tough fifth game in the second set, saving four break points to secure a hold before sealing the match with authority.

The high-stakes quarterfinal now rests on the doubles decider, with Italy aiming to return to the semifinals for a third consecutive year. Cerundolo, buoyed by Argentine support at the Martin Carpena Arena, noted his strong performance as one of his best of the season, while Musetti admitted he was caught off guard by Cerundolo’s intensity. The semifinal stage begins Friday, with the Netherlands set to face Germany after their surprising victory over Spain earlier in the tournament.
