Jannik Sinner Faces Renewed Scrutiny as WADA Appeals Doping Case Clearance

Posted : 30 September 2024

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner admitted on Monday that he is facing a "very difficult moment" as he struggles with sleepless nights over his ongoing doping case. The 23-year-old is under renewed scrutiny after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced it would seek a ban of up to two years, following his positive tests for traces of the steroid clostebol in March. Although Sinner had been cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in August, WADA's challenge has reignited the case.

The ITIA had accepted Sinner's explanation that the banned substance entered his system when his physiotherapist used a spray containing clostebol to treat a cut. Following this treatment, the physiotherapist also provided a massage and sports therapy, inadvertently causing the drug to enter Sinner's body. Just weeks after being cleared, Sinner went on to win the US Open, securing his second major title.

Sinner opened up about the emotional toll the situation has taken on him after his recent quarterfinal win in Beijing, where he defeated Jiri Lehecka 6-2, 7-6 (8/6). He described the ordeal as "delicate and difficult" but maintained his innocence, stating, "I haven't done anything wrong." Despite his efforts to stay focused on tennis, the case has caused him significant distress, leading to sleepless nights.

WADA has appealed the ITIA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that the ruling of "no fault or negligence" was incorrect. Sinner expressed his disappointment at finding himself back in this situation, noting how challenging it has been for both him and his team. Despite the circumstances, he remains determined to focus on his matches and continue performing at his best.
