Jannik Sinner Eyes Mastery on Clay and Grass After Third Australian Open Title

Posted : 27 January 2025

Jannik Sinner, a double Australian Open champion, is focused on expanding his game by mastering both clay and grass courts, aiming to become a more well-rounded player. After clinching his third hardcourt Grand Slam title with a dominant 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev in Melbourne, the world No. 1 is now setting his sights on improving his performances on other surfaces.

This victory, just four months after his US Open triumph, solidified his reputation as one of the most formidable players on hard courts.

While Sinner has already reached the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon in the past two seasons, the 23-year-old is determined to step up his game on clay and grass. "You have to be a complete player, not only on one surface but also the other two," Sinner commented, acknowledging that although his past results on these surfaces weren’t bad, he believes there's room for improvement.

He added that his answers would come through playing, with his focus now on giving his best performance in the upcoming Grand Slams. Sinner's remarkable form on hardcourts, where he has won 37 of his last 38 matches, is a testament to his consistency, but he is determined to devote time and energy to perfecting his skills on other surfaces.

Despite his success, he remains humble and acknowledges that he still has time to improve, especially on grass courts. "It's exactly that what I like; the difficulties trying to understand where I can improve," Sinner said, showing his eagerness to develop further as a player and overcome the challenges ahead.

In addition to his tennis achievements, Sinner has had to contend with a doping case that looms over him, stemming from two failed drug tests last year. Though cleared to continue playing, the Italian faces the possibility of a ban as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with a hearing set for April 16.

Despite this, Sinner expressed pride in his ability to block out the distractions and stay focused on his game. "When I go on court, I try and focus on the match," he said, underscoring the importance of his team’s support in helping him stay mentally strong through difficult times.
