Jannik Sinner is aiming for his first-ever US Open semifinal on Wednesday, while world No. 1 Iga Swiatek looks to halt a strong push by American contenders. Sinner, the only top-four player remaining in the men's draw, faces a tough challenge against fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion. With Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev already out, Sinner's match against Medvedev is a critical test of his abilities.
Sinner and Medvedev have faced off before, with Sinner overcoming a two-set deficit to beat the Russian at the Australian Open earlier this year. However, Medvedev avenged that loss at Wimbledon, and he’s focused on using that victory as a motivator. "I'll be thinking more about Wimbledon than Australia," Medvedev said, noting that their match will likely come down to key moments like break points and surprises. A win would put Medvedev in his 10th Grand Slam semifinal.
The winner of the Sinner-Medvedev match will face either Australia's Alex de Minaur or Britain’s Jack Draper. Draper, who has not dropped a set in four rounds and has saved 20 of 21 break points, is competing in his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Meanwhile, de Minaur is aiming for his first semifinal and hopes to become the first Australian to reach the US Open semifinals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.
With American players Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz already set for an all-American semifinal on Friday, and Emma Navarro securing a spot in the women’s last four, US fans are optimistic about the possibility of a home-grown title sweep this weekend.
