World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters after both players secured victories in straight sets on Wednesday. Sinner overcame American Ben Shelton with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), while Medvedev triumphed over Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas, winning 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
Sinner’s match against Shelton was particularly significant, as the American had defeated him at the same stage of the tournament the previous year. However, the Italian appeared self-assured throughout the match, wrapping it up in just 88 minutes. Sinner gained the upper hand in the first set by breaking Shelton in the ninth game and then dominated the tiebreak in the second set. "It was very tough; you don’t have so much control when you play against him... I just tried to stay strong mentally," Sinner remarked.
Medvedev and Tsitsipas faced off for the 14th time, with the Greek player initially breaking serve in the first game of the second set. However, Medvedev responded by breaking back in the fourth game and again in the eighth, securing his place in the next round. This victory keeps Medvedev's momentum alive as he prepares to take on Sinner, a player he has faced four times this year, with both players having won two matches each.
In addition to the Sinner-Medvedev matchup, the day featured world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who recently defeated Sinner in the China Open final, as well as four-time Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic and world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, all of whom were in action on Wednesday, adding to the excitement of the tournament.
