Jannik Sinner has avoided facing his main rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in the ATP Finals group draw as the Italian looks to claim his first title at the season-ending tournament in Turin. Sinner, currently ranked world No. 1, was placed in the Ilie Nastase Group alongside Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, and Alex de Minaur, with the tournament set to begin on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz, ranked No. 3, was drawn into the John Newcombe Group, where he will compete against Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev. The top two players from each group will progress to the semifinals.
Sinner has had a remarkable year, securing his first Grand Slam titles at the Australian and US Opens and winning five additional ATP titles. However, his season has been overshadowed by controversy after testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol in March. Though initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, the World Anti-Doping Agency has since appealed, seeking a potential two-year ban for the 22-year-old.
