Jannik Sinner overcame the ongoing steroid controversy and a passionate home crowd to secure his spot in the China Open final against Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday. The world No. 1 and defending champion dispatched Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete, ranked 96th, with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), avoiding a significant upset. Sinner's victory marked his 15th consecutive win, reinforcing his strong performance on the court despite the distractions off it.
Facing Bu, a 22-year-old player competing in the most significant match of his career, Sinner dealt with early pressure on his serve in the first set. However, he managed to fend off the threat and gradually regained control of the match. The second set culminated in a tiebreak, where Sinner sealed his victory with his 11th ace, converting his third match point. He expressed that each victory during this challenging period serves as a positive sign for him.
Sinner, 23, has had an exceptional season, leading the tour in match victories. Despite facing scrutiny due to two failed doping tests in March, he was cleared of any wrongdoing after explaining that trace amounts of a banned substance had entered his system unintentionally through a physiotherapist's treatment. The World Anti-Doping Agency has since appealed the decision, seeking a ban of up to two years, leaving Sinner grappling with sleepless nights over the situation.
In the other semifinal, Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam champion, showcased his dominance by defeating Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev with a score of 7-5, 6-3, marking his first final in Beijing and yet to drop a set in the tournament. The two players have met nine times previously, with Alcaraz holding a slight edge at 5-4, though Sinner triumphed in their Beijing semifinal last year. Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, Zhang Shuai, ranked 595th, continued her remarkable run by defeating Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-2, reaching the quarterfinals after a prolonged struggle in singles tennis.
