Jacob Fearnley Triumphs Over Injured Nick Kyrgios in Australian Open First Round

Posted : 13 January 2025

Jacob Fearnley, a promising British tennis star, secured a convincing victory over an injured Nick Kyrgios in the first round of the Australian Open. The 23-year-old Fearnley won 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in his first overseas Grand Slam appearance, marking a remarkable achievement in his fledgling career.

Kyrgios, making his long-awaited return to Melbourne Park after a series of injuries, was unable to maintain his usual level of play due to physical issues, particularly an abdominal injury that had plagued him since the Brisbane International earlier in January.

Fearnley, who had only recently left university, stayed focused throughout the match, capitalizing on Kyrgios' struggles. Despite the home crowd's vocal support for Kyrgios, the atmosphere in John Cain Arena quickly shifted as it became clear that Kyrgios was struggling physically.

The former Wimbledon finalist, who was unranked and had received a wildcard entry, showed signs of discomfort from the start, regularly clutching his abdomen and requiring treatment during the match.

As Kyrgios fought through the pain, Fearnley maintained his composure and dominated the match, refusing to be distracted by his opponent's physical setbacks.

Kyrgios briefly rallied in the third set, attempting to energize the crowd, but Fearnley kept his focus and clinched the match in the tie-break, securing a spot in the second round. The victory was a testament to Fearnley's mental strength and composure under pressure.

Reflecting on his performance, Fearnley described the win as potentially the best match he had ever played. The result marked a significant milestone in his career as he continues to rise through the ranks of the ATP, with his meteoric rise into the top 100 last year setting the stage for a promising future in the sport.
