Jack Draper Reaches First US Open Semifinal After Victory Over De Minaur

Jack Draper secured his first Grand Slam semifinal appearance at the US Open, becoming the first British man to reach the semifinals since Andy Murray's title win 12 years ago. Draper, ranked 25th in the world, triumphed over Australia's Alex de Minaur, ranked 10th, with a commanding 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory. He now awaits a challenging semifinal clash against either top seed Jannik Sinner or 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, as he aims for a spot in Sunday’s final.

 

Despite needing a medical timeout to bandage his right thigh early in the second set, Draper showcased remarkable resilience. The 22-year-old left-hander expressed his excitement after the match, reflecting on his first experience playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Draper credited his improved fitness for his success, acknowledging that De Minaur, who had beaten him in their previous three encounters, may have been dealing with a physical issue but praised his opponent’s fighting spirit.

 

Draper's path to the semifinals has been impressive, as he hasn’t dropped a single set during the tournament. His summer form has been exceptional, having won his first ATP title in Stuttgart and defeating Carlos Alcaraz at Queen's Club prior to Wimbledon. In his quarterfinal against De Minaur, Draper displayed his tenacity, seizing the first set on his sixth set point and taking control with a decisive double break in the third set to seal the win.

 

The British star’s aggressive play paid off, as he forced De Minaur to defend 20 break points, converting six. Draper also fired 11 aces and finished the match with 40 winners. As he prepares for his next match, Draper holds a 1-0 head-to-head record against Sinner, though that win came three years ago, and he lost to Medvedev earlier this year on clay.
