Jack Draper Exits Olympic Singles After Heat-Related Defeat to Taylor Fritz

Posted : 31 July 2024

British number one Jack Draper's Olympic singles campaign ended in disappointment as he struggled in the intense Paris heat during his second-round match. Draper, 22, was defeated by American seventh seed Taylor Fritz with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 2-6 on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Draper began strongly, taking the first set, but faltered as the match progressed. Despite having six break points in the second set’s third game, he failed to convert them. Fritz, 26, capitalized on Draper's missed opportunities and began to dominate the match, especially after a lengthy rally that seemed to drain Draper’s energy.

As temperatures soared above 30°C, Draper’s performance deteriorated. The heat affected his groundstrokes and serve power, allowing Fritz to win 10 of the next 13 games and advance to the last 16. Draper noted that the conditions were the hottest he had experienced this year and lamented not having access to cold water during the match.

In other Olympic tennis news, British icon Andy Murray continued his career with a victory in the men’s doubles alongside Dan Evans, defeating Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen to reach the quarter-finals. In the women’s doubles, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson secured a notable 6-2, 6-3 win over Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund, although Watson later lost in the mixed doubles with Joe Salisbury.
