ITTF announces Botswana as host for Africa Youth Championships

Posted : 11 July 2024

Team Nigeria's table tennis stars will join the rest of the young players across Africa to compete in the 2024 Africa Youth Championships. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has scheduled the championships to be held from July 15 to 21 in Gaborone, Botswana.

The ITTF made this known through its representative from Africa.

The federation said the city would host the continent’s most promising players at the tournament.

“Gaborone boasts exceptional sporting infrastructure, including modern stadiums, training facilities, and accommodation options that meet the high standards required for such a prestigious event.

“The Local Organising Committee (LOC) ensures that athletes, officials, and spectators will enjoy a comfortable and memorable experience during the championships.

“With a strong track record of successfully hosting international sports events, Gaborone has previously hosted regional and continental tournaments,’’ it said.

It added that the city’s capability in handling large-scale competitions makes it a reliable and capable choice for hosting the Africa Youth Championships.

“Geographically positioned at the heart of the Southern African region, Gaborone offers excellent connectivity and accessibility.

“Well-established transportation networks and direct flight connections make it convenient for teams from all corners of the continent to travel to Gaborone without logistical challenges.

“Hosting the continental showpiece provides Gaborone with an opportunity to further develop and upgrade its sporting infrastructure,’’ it said.

It noted that the investments made in preparation for the event would leave a lasting legacy of improved facilities, benefiting local athletes and enhancing the city’s ability to host future sports events.

Motswagole Kudzanani, President of the Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA), emphasized that staging the tournament will lead to an all-around improvement for table tennis.

“Hosting provides a platform to build our capacity and expose our athletes to international standards.

“It also increases our brand visibility, showcasing our capabilities and helping us identify areas for growth,” he said.

In terms of hospitality, Kudzanani said that Botswana’s welcoming nature, rooted in its foundation from forefathers, would ensure that visitors’ happiness was a priority.

He said Gaborone aims to create a tranquil and peaceful environment where everyone would feel at home.
