ITF Announces a Comeback to China and Record Prize Money for Women
Posted : 16 April 2023
Over the next three months, the International Tennis Federation will award record prize money in women's competitions and permit a return to China.
In 164 women's ITF tournaments in April, May, and June, there will be $5 million (£4 million) up for grabs, a 10% increase from 2022.
Since the Covid-19 epidemic, ITF tournaments—the level underneath the ATP and WTA Tours—have not been held in China.
The ITF did not provide any information other than to say that competitions will resume "later this year."
The WTA, which has not hosted competitions in China since 2019, halted competitions there in 2021 because to safety concerns for former world number one in doubles for China Peng Shuai.
In a social media post, Peng accused a Chinese official of sexual assault; however, after momentarily vanishing from view, Peng eventually denied making the claims.
There was a lot of concern for her welfare because of the circumstance.
A decision about a potential return to China was "pending," the WTA told Reuters last week.
Before Chinese competitions can restart, it wants to have a face-to-face meeting with Peng.
The ITF also announced that it would hold its inaugural World Tennis Tour event in Ethiopia as well as its first trips back to Burundi and Cyprus since 2013 and 2016, respectively.
