Italian Open: Novak Djokovic gets over snail progress, looks forward to clash with Grigor Dimitrov
Posted : 13 May 2023
After overcoming a slow first set via a tie-break, Novak Djokovic pulled away from Tomas Martin Etcheverry to go to the third round of the Italian Open on Friday night.
The world No. 1 has a remarkable career record in Rome, where he has made 16 trips and has never failed to advance past the quarterfinals. He was ultimately quite confident in securing his spot in the following round with a 7-6(5) 6-2 victory at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Djokovic's unforced errors made match unpredictable while Etcheverry proved to be tough meat.
Etcheverry broke Djokovic in his opening game, instantly demonstrating that this would not be a parade for the defending champion.
Djokovic saved the first break opportunity, but an errant backhand gave away the second as Etcheverry sprinted out of the gates to create two break points.
Djokovic recovered from a 5-3 deficit in the tie-break to seize control of the set and the match.
