Italian Open 2023: Iga Swiatek beats Donna Vekic, another win in sight
Posted : 17 May 2023
Iga Swiatek, the world's top player, extended her string of victories at the Italian Open by defeating Donna Vekic of Croatia to go to the quarterfinals.
Despite some shaky moments against the 24th seed Vekic, Swiatek, 21, who is vying for his third straight victory in Rome, prevailed 6-3 6-4.
The three-time major winner has won 14 of her most recent contests on the clay in Rome.
In the quarterfinals, she will play Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina, putting that record on the line.
"Donna is an experienced player and can play really well on most surfaces. She put on a lot of pressure but I'm happy to handle it and come through," Swiatek said.
Swiatek wasn't at her best in a last-16 match that was postponed to Tuesday in Rome due to Monday's rain, and she had particular trouble with her forehand.
