Italian Open 2023: Holger Rune sends Novak Djokovic home
Posted : 18 May 2023
When he was defeated by rising Danish talent Holger Rune in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic had his early elimination from the tournament since 2013.
The top-seeded Serb, who will be 36 next week, lost to 20-year-old Rune 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on the Rome clay.
Djokovic was attempting to win his eighth championship as he got ready for the French Open on May 28.
In the semifinals, Rune will face Casper Ruud of Norway, the fourth seed.
Injury has interfered with Djokovic's preparations for the French Open. He missed the most recent Madrid Open due to an elbow issue before playing again in Rome to improve his shape and fitness.
At Roland Garros, the 22-time Grand Slam victor will have the chance to surpass Rafael Nadal in terms of the most men's major championships ever won.
