Italian Open 2023: Defeating Cameron Norrie, Novak Djokovic advances to the quarterfinals
Posted : 16 May 2023
By narrowly defeating British No. 1 Cameron Norrie, defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the 17th time in a row.
The 35-year-old Serbian triumphed 6-3 6-4 in Rome and will be replaced as the world's top player by Carlos Alcaraz the following week.
When Norrie slammed an overhead into Djokovic's ankle in the second set after the Serbian had already conceded the game, the already tense match took a turn for the worst.
In the round of eight, Djokovic will take against Holger Rune, a seventh-seeded Dane.
Injury has interfered with the Serb's preparation for the French Open, but he is regaining his form in time to compete for his 23rd Grand Slam singles championship when play begins on May 28.
