Italian Jasmine Paolini wins Court 9, Victoria Azarenka leads despite rain

As threatening clouds loomed overhead, the weather held off its rain to grant tennis enthusiasts the opportunity to witness top-tier matches at the IGAm Stage in Montreal.
 
Italian player Jasmine Paolini claimed the day's first victory by overcoming Donna Vekic on Court 9. This singular match concluded before rain interrupted proceedings at Jarry Park, with former world number one Victoria Azarenka leading 3-0 against Magda Linette.
 
After a brief 30-minute interruption for rain, the players returned to the court. Driven by the prospect of completing the match, Azarenka exhibited a merciless performance upon the resumption of play on Centre Court, securing a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory.
 
Additional results from the daytime session included Karolina Pliskova's hard-fought three-set triumph over Zhu Lin, Sorana Cirstea's victory against Varvara Gracheva, and Belinda Bencic's successful defense of her 2015 title against Lucia Bronzetti.
 
The evening session enjoyed milder weather conditions as it commenced on schedule. The spotlight was on the legendary Venus Williams as she faced her compatriot Madison Keys on Centre Court. Although she faced a slow start and allowed Keys to seize the first set, Venus showcased her enduring competitive spirit at this level.
 
At 43 years old, boasting seven Grand Slam tournament titles, Venus fought tenaciously in the second set. Engaging in extended rallies and making net approaches, she delighted her fans. Despite eight match points slipping through her fingers, Keys maintained her composure and ultimately clinched the battle with scores of 6-2 and 7-6, following a contest that lasted nearly two hours.
 
In other matches, Sloane Stephens managed to overcome her nerves and secure a victory of 6-4, 7-6(2) against Anhelina Kalinina. Jennifer Brady, on her journey back from a year-long hiatus due to injury, snatched a hard-fought 7-6(7), 0-6, 7-6(8) triumph from Jelena Ostapenko.
