Iga Swiatek wins Canadian Open semi-finals, faces Jessica Pegula in next round

Posted : 12 August 2023
Iga Swiatek, the current World No. 1, displayed a dominant performance against Danielle Collins, securing a place in the Canadian Open semi-finals in Montreal. Swiatek emphasized the need to elevate her intensity, which proved effective as she triumphed over Collins with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

This victory marked Swiatek's 50th match win of the season and propelled her into the next round where she will face Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed. Pegula advanced after defeating her doubles partner Coco Gauff in a closely contested match that ended 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.

In her encounter with Collins, Swiatek demonstrated her prowess, ensuring her world No. 1 status extends for 72 weeks. She expressed satisfaction with her powerful play and stated, "I really needed to go even higher in terms of the intensity." The victory not only secured her spot in the semi-finals but also boosted her confidence for future matches.

Collins, a qualifier, acknowledged the energy drain from her intensive schedule, attempting to win her sixth match in seven days. Although she attributed some impact to fatigue, she commended Swiatek's exceptional performance and tactical play.

Pegula's win against Gauff was marked by Gauff's struggle with nine double faults, allowing Pegula to break at a crucial moment in the third set and eventually secure the victory. Reflecting on the match against her doubles partner, Pegula mentioned the challenge of facing someone familiar but emphasized her focus on maintaining pressure early in the match.

Liudmila Samsonova had a memorable day, first defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3, and later returning to beat Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-4 in the evening session. Samsonova's next opponent will be third seed Elena Rybakina, who secured a hard-fought win against Daria Kasatkina with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(8) in a match that concluded at nearly 3 am in Montreal.
