Iga Swiatek demonstrated her determination to defend her French Open title as she secured a hard-fought victory of 6-2, 7-6(7) against Beatriz Haddad Maia in the semifinals. The Polish tennis star will now face Karolina Muchova in the highly anticipated final, aiming to claim the title for the third time.
Although Swiatek faced an early setback, being broken in the first game of the match, she quickly regained her composure and dominated the first set. The second set started with some difficulties as Haddad Maia displayed a spirited performance, resulting in Swiatek falling behind with a break.
However, the world No. 1 showed her resilience, mounting a comeback and saving multiple break points before ultimately clinching the victory in a tightly contested tie-break.
While Swiatek had previously recorded four bagel sets in the tournament, Haddad Maia proved to be a formidable opponent, preventing another one-sided set.
Despite Haddad Maia securing an early break, Swiatek swiftly regained control of the set, pressuring her Brazilian rival with powerful baseline shots that forced errors.
The first set was sealed by Swiatek in just 39 minutes, showcasing her dominance through a series of punishing forehands down the line.
Following the first set, Swiatek momentarily lost her focus upon returning to the court, committing a double fault and offering Haddad Maia a break point opportunity.
However, the top seed managed to stave off the threat and held her serve with a resounding roar of approval. Haddad Maia refused to back down and broke Swiatek's serve in the third game.
Swiatek responded with a break of her own in the sixth game and successfully defended a break point in the seventh game. In a stroke of luck, Swiatek wrapped up the game with a fortuitous net cord, leaving Haddad Maia visibly disappointed.
Nevertheless, Haddad Maia held her serve and pushed Swiatek to save three break points in the ninth game. The closely contested second set eventually led to a tie-break, marking the first tie-break of the tournament for Swiatek.
The battle was intense, with Swiatek needing to fend off a set point before ultimately emerging victorious after two hours and nine minutes on the court.
With this hard-fought win, Swiatek secures her place in the final against Karolina Muchova, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in her semifinal match. Swiatek's remarkable journey to defend her French Open title continues, as she looks forward to the thrilling showdown in the final.
