Iga Swiatek reclaims world No. 1 ranking with WTA Finals victory

Posted : 07 November 2023
Iga Swiatek secured her place in the WTA Finals, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a match that spanned two days, ultimately setting up a final showdown with Jessica Pegula. The 22-year-old Polish sensation dominated the contest with a straight-set victory, not only earning her first career title at the WTA Finals but also reclaiming her No. 1 world ranking, which she had previously lost to Sabalenka in 2023.

In the final against Jessica Pegula, Iga Swiatek showcased a remarkable performance, winning 6-1, 6-0, and regaining the world No. 1 ranking in the process. Swiatek had to defeat her American opponent on Monday to reclaim the top spot in the rankings, which she lost to Aryna Sabalenka after the US Open.

The semi-final between Swiatek and Sabalenka began on Saturday but was interrupted by rain, concluding on Sunday. Consequently, the final was rescheduled for Monday, where Swiatek faced Pegula, who had been impressive throughout the season-ending tournament.

Swiatek asserted her dominance from the outset, comfortably winning the first set 6-1. In the second set, she broke Pegula early, establishing a 3-0 lead. Swiatek continued to overpower her opponent, ultimately securing a 6-1, 6-0 victory in just 59 minutes. This win marked Swiatek's 11th consecutive victory, as she went 6-0 in Beijing before the season finale in Cancun and maintained a flawless 5-0 record in Mexico.

Following the match, Jessica Pegula congratulated her opponent, acknowledging Swiatek's influence on her own development as a player. Swiatek, in turn, expressed her gratitude to the fans, both Polish and from other nations, for their unwavering support, which motivates her to achieve more. She commended Pegula for her performance throughout the season and looked forward to more success, emphasizing the importance of teamwork.

For Swiatek, this victory not only marked her return to the No. 1 ranking but also represented her first win in the WTA Finals, after reaching the semi-finals in the previous year and the round-robin stage the year before.
