Iga Swiatek loses to Jelena Ostapenko in quarterfinals; faces Coco Gauff

Posted : 04 September 2023
In a surprising turn of events at the US Open, the reigning champion and world No. 1, Iga Swiontek, was ousted in the quarterfinals. Swiontek, who had not dropped a set in the tournament until this point, faced off against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, ranked 21st in the world. The match ended 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in favor of Ostapenko, sending Swiontek home. Her opponent in the next round will be Coco Gauff.

The first set began with Swiontek losing her serve but quickly recovering with two breaks to secure a 3-6 win. However, Ostapenko fought back in the second set, taking control and winning it 6-3. The third set showcased Ostapenko's dominance as she broke Swiontek four times, securing a convincing 6-1 victory and a spot in the quarterfinals.

On the men's side, Novak Djokovic, who narrowly avoided elimination in the previous round after falling behind 2-0 in sets, had a smoother path to the quarterfinals. He defeated Croatia's Borna Gojo, ranked 20th in the world, with a score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. Djokovic's next challenge will be facing the ninth-ranked Taylor Fritz, a formidable opponent.

Djokovic started strongly in the first set, breaking Gojo's serve twice to claim a comfortable 6-2 victory. The second set proved more challenging, as Djokovic found himself trailing 2-0 after a break by Gojo. However, Djokovic mounted a comeback, breaking back and eventually winning the set 7-5.

In the third set, Djokovic capitalized on a break in the seventh game, demonstrating his dominance, and closed out the match with a 6-1 win. His quarterfinal clash with Taylor Fritz promises to be a more demanding encounter.

Fritz, looking to upset Djokovic, secured his place in the quarterfinals by defeating Switzerland's Dominik Stricker 6-7 (2), 4-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted two hours and six minutes.
