Iga Swiatek Knocked Out by Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart Open Quarterfinals

Posted : 20 April 2025

Poland's Iga Swiatek, the world number two, was knocked out of the Stuttgart Open on Saturday in the quarterfinals by Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. This marked Swiatek's sixth straight loss to Ostapenko, with Saturday's defeat being her first on clay, despite having previously won the tournament twice.

Swiatek, who came into the match with an impressive 11-1 record on Stuttgart’s clay, struggled as Ostapenko broke her serve three times in the first set, taking control early on.

Swiatek responded by winning the second set, but Ostapenko regained momentum in the deciding set, winning 12 of the first 15 points and sealing the match. Ostapenko, who has now defeated Swiatek in all six of their encounters, will face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinals on Sunday.

Alexandrova continued her impressive run, having earlier eliminated third-ranked Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-4, a result that stunned many as Pegula had recently reached the final of the Miami Open and won the Charleston Open.

Pegula struggled throughout the match, failing to win a game in the first set, and although she mounted a comeback in the second, saving multiple match points, she couldn't extend the match further. Alexandrova's victory gives her five WTA top-10 wins this year, tying her with Mirra Andreeva and Madison Keys.

The rest of the day’s action saw world number one Aryna Sabalenka and American Coco Gauff in action, with Sabalenka looking to claim her first Stuttgart title after three consecutive finals appearances from 2021 to 2023.
