Iga Swiatek ends Coco Gauff's winning streak, advances to China Open final
Posted : 07 October 2023
Coco Gauff's remarkable 16-match winning streak came to an end in the semi-finals of the China Open when she faced the world No. 2, Iga Swiatek. The Polish former world No. 1 is now awaiting the winner of the Elena Rybakina and Liudmila Samsonova match in the Sunday final.
In a commanding performance, Iga Swiatek avenged her defeat at the Cincinnati Open semi-finals by defeating Coco Gauff with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the China Open semi-finals on Saturday. After losing her world No. 1 ranking following the US Open, Swiatek is now vying for another WTA 1000 title in the upcoming final.
Swiatek's victory puts an end to Coco Gauff's impressive streak of 16 consecutive wins, which began at the Cincinnati Open in August. Swiatek expressed her satisfaction with her performance after the match, stating that she feels like she can play freely again and that she switched her attitude following the US Open.
With this win, Swiatek now has four titles to her name in the current season, and if she secures a fifth in the final, it would make her the leader in titles on the WTA Tour for 2023. In the semi-final match, Swiatek displayed a strong serve and solid play from deep, while Gauff struggled to match her opponent's consistency.
Swiatek did not face a break point in the opening set and only committed four unforced errors. She broke Gauff at 3-1 to claim the first set after 40 minutes. In the second set, Swiatek continued her dominance, breaking Gauff early to take a 2-0 lead. Despite Gauff's efforts, including a medical timeout for a shoulder issue, Swiatek's strong performance ultimately secured her place in Sunday's final.
