Iga Swiatek triumphed at the Rome Open on Saturday, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-3 in the final to secure her third title at the Foro Italico. The World No. 1 displayed a commanding performance against second-ranked Sabalenka, marking the last significant tournament before she defends her French Open title.
Swiatek, in front of a packed centre court, notched her 36th win of the year. She became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to win both the Madrid and Rome titles in the same season. This victory positions her as the favorite for a third consecutive Roland Garros title later this month, following her victory over Sabalenka, echoing her success in Madrid.
The Polish star extended her winning record against Sabalenka to 8-3, demonstrating another stellar performance throughout the tournament, where she did not drop a single set. In contrast to their three-set battle in Madrid, Saturday’s match was more straightforward, with Sabalenka struggling to mount a significant challenge despite her aspirations to win in Rome.
Swiatek clinched the opening set in just 36 minutes, dominating with precise and powerful tennis. Sabalenka, who has won the last two Australian Opens, squandered seven break points in the second set. Once Swiatek broke Sabalenka's serve in the seventh game, the outcome seemed inevitable, and she swiftly wrapped up the match and the championship.
