Iga Swiatek, the world's top-ranked player, continued her preparations for the US Open by securing a victory against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova at the Cincinnati Open. The 22-year-old, who is the top seed, triumphed over her Czech opponent with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 scoreline, securing her spot in the semi-finals.
Swiatek is set to face either American Coco Gauff or Italian Jasmine Paolini in the upcoming round. Currently holding the world number one ranking for the 72nd consecutive week, Swiatek is gearing up for her title defense at Flushing Meadows, starting on August 28th.
In a previous match against China's Zheng Qinwen, Swiatek rallied from behind to secure a win and later used her platform to speak out against online abuse. Against Vondrousova, Swiatek faced an initial challenge as she trailed 5-3 in the opening set. However, she managed to turn the tide, breaking Vondrousova's serve and winning a tie-break to take the set.
The four-time Grand Slam champion dominated the second set, securing three service breaks on her way to her 10th semi-final appearance of the year. Vondrousova, who had previously claimed an unexpected victory at Wimbledon, competed in her first WTA 1000 quarter-final in over three years.
In another quarter-final match, world number seven Coco Gauff is set to compete against 43rd-ranked Jasmine Paolini. This matchup came about after Paolini's last-16 opponent Elena Rybakina retired due to injury. The quarter-finals also include an intriguing rematch between Ons Jabeur and world number two Aryna Sabalenka, replicating their Wimbledon semi-final showdown that Jabeur eventually won after a comeback.
