World No. 1 Iga Swiatek boasts a dominant 10-1 record over Coco Gauff, but the top seed recognizes the American's growth since her teenage breakthrough, expecting a challenging encounter in their French Open semifinal on Thursday. Swiatek acknowledges that Gauff has matured significantly, posing a more formidable test compared to their past meetings.
Gauff's sole victory over Swiatek occurred on a hardcourt in Cincinnati last year, where she triumphed in a three-set match en route to her first WTA 1000 title and subsequently her first Grand Slam at the US Open. Despite Swiatek's three consecutive straight-set wins over Gauff since then, including in the 2022 Roland Garros final and last year's quarterfinals, the Polish star is wary of Gauff's improved mental game.
"Her mental game is better now. Previously, it was easier to 'crack her' when leading," Swiatek remarked about Gauff. "But it's normal for her to progress. At her age, hard work leads to improvement, and she's doing just that. Every aspect of her game is better because she's transitioning from being a teenager on tour to a more mature player."
Swiatek has been in formidable form since a second-round scare against Naomi Osaka, easily dispatching her opponents, including a double bagel win over Anastasia Potapova and a decisive victory against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
As Swiatek and Gauff prepare for their semifinal clash, Gauff remains determined to find a better strategy against the world No. 1. Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, Italy's 12th seed Jasmine Paolini faces Russia's unseeded teenager Mirra Andreeva, who is the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist in nearly three decades.
