Iga Swiatek aims to reclaim world number one ranking in WTA finals

Iga Swiatek has a chance to regain the top spot in the world rankings if she can secure a victory over Jessica Pegula in the WTA Finals in Cancun on Monday. Swiatek's path to the final included defeating Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who had taken over as the world number one in September, ending Swiatek's 75-week reign at the top. The 22-year-old Polish player aims to finish another season as the number one player.
Speaking about her upcoming final match, Swiatek stated, "It's still a long way away because I feel like tomorrow's match will be the toughest one. We can talk about it tomorrow after the match. I'm just going to continue doing what I've been doing." Her opponent, Jessica Pegula, aged 29, earned her spot in the final by defeating US Open champion Coco Gauff.
Swiatek's path to the final was marked by a semi-final victory that had to be suspended due to rain after three games. Upon resumption on Sunday, Swiatek quickly broke Sabalenka's serve, maintained a lead, and secured the opening set. Sabalenka, an Australian Open champion and US Open runner-up this year, could not create further opportunities as Swiatek broke her serve twice in the second set, achieving a victory that equaled the 67 wins she had in 2022.
Both Swiatek and Pegula have had an impressive run in the tournament, not dropping a set throughout the week. The winner of the final is set to claim an additional £1.1 million in prize money and 420 ranking points on top of the £1.2 million and 1,080 ranking points they have already earned.
