Top seed Iga Swiatek showcased her dominance at Wimbledon, advancing to the third round of the women's singles with a commanding straight-set victory over Petra Martic on Centre Court.
The Polish world number one faced resistance from Martic, who struggled with a back injury and yielded crucial breaks late in both sets, culminating in a 6-4, 6-3 win for Swiatek. This victory extended Swiatek's impressive win streak to 21 matches, highlighting her formidable form despite past challenges on grass where she has yet to surpass the quarter-finals at SW19.
In her upcoming third-round match, Swiatek will meet Yulia Putintseva, who upset Czech 27th seed Katerina Siniakova earlier in the day with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the women's draw, American fifth seed Jessica Pegula suffered an upset defeat at the hands of world number 42 Wang Xinyu. Wang triumphed 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1 on court three, setting up a third-round clash against Britain's Harriet Dart.
Despite upsets like Pegula's, several other seeded players cruised through with dominant straight-set wins on a windy day at SW19. Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, overcame German Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, advancing to face either Caroline Wozniacki or Leylah Fernandez, whose match was suspended due to bad light.
Additionally, Ons Jabeur, the Tunisian 10th seed and two-time Wimbledon runner-up, defeated American Robin Montgomery 6-1, 7-5, setting up a third-round showdown with 21st seed Elina Svitolina after the Ukrainian's straight-set victory over Jule Niemeier.
