Heather Watson beats Jule Niemeier in Nottingham Open
Posted : 13 June 2023
Heather Watson, a British tennis player, expressed feeling unfairly affected by the absence of ranking points from Wimbledon last year.
Her notable performance, reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam, would typically result in an improved ranking and direct entry into other WTA tournaments, including majors.
However, due to Wimbledon's decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players in response to the invasion of Ukraine, no points were awarded by the WTA and ATP governing bodies.
Watson acknowledged that it was not Wimbledon's fault, but she still felt disappointed by the situation.
Currently ranked 195th in the world, she has been competing in lower-level ITF events and struggling to qualify for Grand Slam main draws. Despite her success in winning ITF tournaments, the lack of valuable points has hindered her ranking progress.
Watson hopes to receive a wildcard entry for Wimbledon this year, but if not, she would need to go through qualifying rounds.
In her recent match at the Nottingham grass-court event, Watson staged an impressive comeback to win against Jule Niemeier. Maria Sakkari, the top seed and world number eight, also started her campaign with a straight-set victory.
