Harriet Dart emerged victorious in a thrilling all-British clash against Jodie Burrage in the opening round of the Rothesay Classic.
Dart, ranked 134th, fought back from a set down to secure a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Both players had enjoyed recent successes, with Burrage reaching her first-ever WTA final and Dart making it to the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year. Despite their familiarity with each other's games, Dart praised Burrage's confidence and battled hard to come out on top.
In the first set, Dart took an early break to gain an advantage, but Burrage responded strongly, breaking Dart twice and taking the set.
However, Dart regained control in the second set, securing a double break to force a decider.
The final set was a tense affair, with both players displaying fierce determination and battling at the baseline. Dart finally broke Burrage's serve and held on to claim victory after two hours and 20 minutes of intense competition.
In another match, Katie Boulter, the Rothesay Open Nottingham champion, suffered an early exit as she was defeated by world No. 39 Lin Zhu. Despite holding early break leads in both sets, Boulter struggled to maintain her serve, allowing Zhu to break six times. Zhu saved 10 break points and sealed the win with a score of 7-5, 7-5 in an hour and 46 minutes.
Overall, the opening round of the Rothesay Classic showcased the intense competition among British players, with Dart triumphing over Burrage in a hard-fought battle and Zhu proving too strong for Boulter.
