On the first day of Wimbledon, Harriet Dart's campaign came to an end as she was defeated by France's Diane Parry. Parry, ranked 96th in the world, managed to come from behind to secure a hard-fought victory against the British player, with a scoreline of 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-4.
Dart, who is ranked 14 places lower than her opponent, has now experienced three first-round exits at Grand Slam tournaments.
The day also saw other British players, including Jodie Burrage and Katie Swan in the women's draw, as well as Dan Evans, Jan Choinski, and Liam Broady in the men's competition.
Playing on court 12, Dart faced an expectant crowd after a promising build-up on grass, reaching the quarter-finals in both Nottingham and Birmingham.
Despite falling behind with a double break, she showcased her resilience by winning consecutive games, energizing the partisan crowd with her impressive shots.
In the first set, Dart's determination paid off as she won the tie-break after coming from behind. However, the blustery conditions in the second set seemed to affect both players' serving, and Dart struggled to regain her composure after falling 3-0 behind.
Frustration crept in, as she expressed her displeasure towards her family and coaches in the crowd, and she failed to win a game in the second set.
Dart briefly showed signs of a comeback in the deciding set, but Parry, who had reached the third round at Wimbledon last year, took control of the match.
Although Dart saved one match point, her hopes of a successful run at the tournament ended as she sent a backhand wide. Her disappointment was evident as she vented her frustration by smashing her racket into the grass.
Having previously reached the third round in 2019, which remains her best Grand Slam result, Dart will likely view this as a missed opportunity, considering her preparations on grass leading up to the tournament.
