Great Britain one win away from Davis Cup finals knockout stage after Dan Evans' comeback victory against France

Posted : 17 September 2023
Great Britain is on the verge of advancing to the Davis Cup Finals knockout stage following a determined comeback by Dan Evans that gave them the lead against France.

In a crucial match with a spot in the Final Eight at stake, Evans rallied to defeat Arthur Fils with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the opening contest of the best-of-three tie.

British number one, Cameron Norrie, has the opportunity to secure his team's progression by defeating Ugo Humbert in the second singles match.

If Norrie were to lose and France levels the tie, Evans and Neal Skupski would still have the chance to clinch qualification in the deciding doubles match.

In this group stage event held at Manchester's AO Arena, four nations, including Britain, Australia, France, and Switzerland, are competing. They face each other once in a round-robin format, with the top two countries earning a place in the knockout stage of the men's team competition, known as the 'Final Eight,' which will be held in Malaga in November.

With Australia already securing their spot and Switzerland eliminated, Britain's path to qualification hinges on a victory over France. The British team, which last claimed the Davis Cup in 2015, is eager to make a return to the knockout stage after missing out last year.
