German Table Tennis superstar wins Lagos fans' heart

Dimitrij Ovtcharov is one of the most skillful table tennis players ever, he rose to the peak of the world ranking in January 2018 as number one. 

His conduct on and off the table endeared him to a lot of fans globally and now Lagos fans.

On his first visit to Lagos, fans were attracted to him, and at his first training, they turned out en masse to welcome the German machine.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov is fast becoming fans' favourite in Lagos in the absence of homeboy, Quadri Aruna.

And he repaid their confidence with a seamless performance in his first round match against Korea's Park Gyuhyeon.

Like a true champion, Ovtcharov, known as Dima, punished his opponent with a 3-0 beating (11-4, 11-7, 11-9) to book a place in the second round, where he is expected to face China’s Liang Yanning.

Dima, whose father, Mikhail, was a multiple national player for the former Soviet Union, was "really happy" with his performance. 

"The first round is always tough. I felt when I went into the box the whole crowd supported me. I directly got the smile on my face, more confidence in my heart, and I really enjoyed playing this match. 

"I think, I played really good ball. It moved well. He was very aggressive. 

"The last set was a high level, as my opponent played many strong releases.

"There was lot of good stuff for the spectators to see. I am happy I went through and I am looking forward to the match against the Chinese tomorrow," Dima said.
