Gauff, Swiatek to miss Billie Jean King Cup finals due to tight Tennis calendar

Posted : 10 October 2023

US Open champion Coco Gauff and French Open winner Iga Swiatek will be absent from the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup finals, which commence in Spain shortly after the conclusion of the WTA Finals in Mexico. Additionally, world number four Jessica Pegula, who, like Gauff, is participating in both singles and doubles at the WTA Finals, won't be part of the United States team.

However, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and the Czech duo of Marketa Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova intend to participate in both events. The decision to award the WTA Finals to Cancun was made in early September, four months after Seville was named as the host city for the Billie Jean King Cup finals.

Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic were also in contention to host the WTA Finals, which feature the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the year. The WTA Finals will conclude in Cancun on November 5th, with the 12-team Billie Jean King Cup finals beginning in Seville on November 7th.

Swiatek's absence from last year's Billie Jean King Cup finals in Glasgow was due to the tight scheduling, as the 2022 WTA Finals were slated to end in Texas just one day before the start of the Billie Jean King Cup finals. Swiatek expressed her disappointment a year ago, emphasizing the challenges of extensive travel and time zone changes.

Other notable players, including Caroline Garcia, Madison Keys, and Belinda Bencic, will be participating in Seville, with Bencic set to be the number one player for the defending champions Switzerland.
